It is now a fact that teenage smoking and tobacco use is a regular habit among the 13-18 year age group. In America, 25% of 12th graders and 28% of high school kids are smoking daily.

Reliable studies have now shown that some 6,000 teens begin to smoke everyday, 2,000 of whom will mature into smoking adults. Of today’s adult smokers, 80% say they began the habit before age 18.
Many teens that smoke say they would wish to quit cigarettes but are unable to. By the time one has smoked their 100th cigarette, they are definitively hooked on the habit.
What leads teens to smoke?
They are a group that likes to act out behavior that is associated with coolness and daring. If not properly educated on the dangers of smoking and tobacco they easily fall into the trap.
Manufacturers and advertisers of tobacco also depict the habit as associated with admirable lifestyles and young minds are easily lured to this type of images.
The addiction and its effects.
Nicotine is the active drug present in tobacco that causes addiction and dependency. Like most other addictions smoking plays on the victims low self-esteem and low self-image.
Other anti-social behavior will also be exhibited by the teen, and it is more likely that he will abuse other drugs and substances than his non-smoking age-mates.
Intervention in teenage smoking and tobacco addiction is called for. The dangers are so many, but most of all the health and life of the smoking adolescent is at risk.
